The Battle of Two Good Poker Players

by admin on March 3rd, 2010

Really good poker players are the stuff of legend. These players are the kind of poker geniuses that new players try to emulate and older players wish that they were. Very importantly, these good online poker players are most likely heard about on the grapevine of rumor. Very few people have really come across one of these truly stupendous players in live actual play in a brick and mortar casino. Most players will only hear of their reputation and develop a righteous fear of poker sharks. While the fear of a single poker shark is merited, what happens when two poker sharks meet? Is there any hope for the average player in this situation?

With all of these poker sharks swimming in the water, however, players should realize that poker sharks do not often swim together. When two of these lauded players meet at the table, they struggle for dominance. The result is that the poker game becomes a battle between greats. In fighting each other these poker sharks often forget to catch the fish. You can often swim by unnoticed when the poker waters are churned up with the ferocious beating of two poker sharks. However, the meeting of two poker sharks is even rarer than coming across really good poker players at the table.

Can You Guess the Other Players’ Hands?

by admin on February 9th, 2010

There is an old adage in the poker world that the amateur reads his own hand while the professional reads his opponents’. Taken with a grain of salt, this phrase shows a lot about the different between amateur and professional players. Amateurs play a game that is focused on the cards in their hand. The whole point, in the mind of the amateur, is to assemble a good value hand that will hopefully be better than anyone else’s at the table. The professionals approach the game very differently. In the professional mind it is not enough simply to have a high scoring hand. The professional knows that they need to have a hand that will definitely be better than all of the other player’s. If even one player has a better hand, the pot is lost.

In order to ensure that they have the best hand at the showdown, most professional players have fine tuned the art of predicting what is in the other player’s hands. Based on general rules of probability, a professional online poker player can often list the cards that you have in your hand sight unseen. This is one of the most fundamental concepts of professional online poker playing. Master this before you move on to the truly complicated stuff.

Hand Analysis: 2-Six

by admin on January 7th, 2010

I think it’s difficult to look down and find a hand worse than 2 6 in the hole. Even 2 7 has the mystique of being known as ‘the worst hand in poker,’ whereas 2 6 is just two of the crappiest cards around melded together into one. Yes, 2 6 has a slight advantage in a large ring over the 2 7 in that it possible to make a straight, though the slim chance of flopping exactly 3 4 5 is mostly negligible, and even then you haven’t made the nuts. People raising or calling raises with the 2 6 suited or unsuited are either crazy or wildly aggressive to a fault, or just don’t know how to spell online poker, in the parlance of Phil Hellmuth. I bet it would feel pretty amazing to beat Hellmuth with this hand though. That might be a dream come true. For heaven’s sake, though, people, even the wildest of men have to draw the line somewhere. I’d say we start by drawing the line with the 2 6. It’s just a bigger bruise than even the gnarliest online poker bruiser seems to need to be splashing around with. You’ve got to muck one now and again. Save your crazy money for the 2 4 or even the 7 2, so you can at least say you won with the worst of all.

Playing Suited Aces

by admin on December 14th, 2009

In Texas Hold ‘Em online poker, most players are happy to get a suited Ace as a starter hand. If three cards to the suit come out on the board, then it will complete the nut flush. And the Ace could always just win the pot by making high pair.

Suited Ace hands though are not all equal. Some are have more power to complete a winning hand other than the nut flush. The other suited poker card -the kicker – is important too. A King kicker is obviously a powerful hand and can be played from any position, even with a raise. Other highly ranked cards from 10 through the Queen are powerful too because these can complete a straight, or produce high pair or two high pairs.

It is the medium strength cards, from 6-9, that are riskier to play. These cannot complete to a straight, and if the kicker card does pair, it is not especially powerful. You can call the big blind pre-flop with these poker cards if there is no raise ahead of you, but if the flop misses your cards, with no Ace, kicker or suit match, then prepare to fold.

With suited Aces, the smaller cards 2-5, can also complete to straight, giving these starters more potential than the medium card kicker. However, it is still a weak Ace without the matching suit or straight materializing, and should probably be folded if any raise comes out.

Playing Multiple Tables

by admin on August 5th, 2009

Some online poker players just can’t enough of their game, and play at several poker tables simultaneously online. Obviously, this presents an intense, fast moving experience for anyone and you have to play close attention to layers and layers of details. There are few ways to make multi-table poker action easier to execute. Some sites will let you play multiple tables at once and this is preferable to playing at two different sites. When you on different sites, one site’s software can interfere with another site’s. For instance, you may be right in the middle of a crucial decision for a big pot at one site, when a different table from another site pops up in front of you, wrecking your concentration. If you want to play multiples, find an online poker site that allows it. Look for sites where you can adjust the size of the tables so you can have two open at once on your screen. If you are really a multiples maniac and play more than two tables at once, you won’t have room to clearly see so many tables all at once on your screen and will most likely have to switch back and forth, another distraction. The downside to playing multiples is that it is easier to hit the wrong button and make a mistake. It is harder to concentrate and remember all the players you are up against. At a live action table, you only have to track nine other players at most. For multiple tables, you need to be aware of dozens of other players. The advantage of playing multiples is that you can increase your earnings. Your hourly rate at each table will most likely decrease, but the fact that you have two sources going, means your overall hourly earning rate will go up.

Hand Selection

by admin on May 5th, 2009

One of the most important things to consider when you play Texas Hold ‘Em online poker is which hands you want to play. The majority of pocket cards that you are dealt at the casino won’t end up winning at showdown, so if you play every hand that you’re dealt, you’re gong to be chipless before you know it. Consider these situations when you are deciding whether or not to play your hand.

Cards-it should be a no-brainer, but you’d be surprised at what starts to look good after a few cold poker hands. Be careful about sucker hands-high cards with low kickers like King-5 unsuited get people in trouble. You might get excited about that face card, but that low kicker might be what kills you after a few rounds of betting.

Position-the value of your hole cards depends on more than whether or not you’ve got faces or pocket pairs. If you are the first to act, be pickier about the cards that you play, because you don’t know how the players after you are going to act. You don’t want to limp in with a 10-9 suited, only to have some joker after make you fold with a monster raise.

Hand selection is the first step to taking home a big pot, so be selective and play the hands that will give you an edge.

Automatic Poker

by admin on February 25th, 2009

Online poker games are based on software that automatically executes all the logistics of playing poker . The cards are automatically shuffled and dealt, the betting order and sizes controlled. The winning hand gets the pot in the blink of an eye, and side pots are quickly calculated and awarded too. Unlike live games, where it sometimes takes a few seconds to recognize the winning hand and sort through any side pots, poker software does all the work.

Automated poker is now coming to some live casinos too. “Poker Pro” is the most widely known automated poker table provider. These table actually blend aspects of online poker with live action games. Players each get their control panel console where they view their hand, and select an action to take.

All bet and raising amounts are automatically presented so there can be no wrong combination of chips put into the pot. And just as in online poker, no one can go out of turn. This can thwart playing out of turn as a deceptive tactic meant to deceive others that the impulsive player has a strong hand.

A time allotted for each player to make a move can also be restricted, without other players asking for a clock to time the decision making process.

Automated tables can deal many more hands an hour than a live dealer, and online players will probably feel right home with these automated tables. For those who have only played at live tables, a demo from the floor manager will help your understand the table’s console various functions.
