Choose your Java Wisely
by admin on January 18th, 2010
Java has come along a long way. Many would agree with this. I did not until the Java 1.5 “Tiger” hit me. The tiger had several new features, and more importantly, it has new syntax. Six major upgrades that the tiger presents are certainly the generics, enhanced for loop, autoboxing (unboxing), improvement on Typesafe enum, Static import and the metadata.Of course there are many more, which can be found at java’s official site. Out of these six, at least four would be used in my daily “programming” life. From java 1.1 to 1.4, it seemed more like new frills were simply added. It felt like earning more brownie points when you downloaded the newer version. But should I start using 1.5 immediately, maybe not.
The developers and programmers (if you distinguish between them) are left with one great dilemma (me too). It certainly is as to which version to use when preparing software in java. This problem hides itself under the carpet when you are programming for a specific client with a specific system where you can get it upgrade on site, but when the app is going to be used by Mr. Williams from South Africa and Ms. Lee from Japan, you really have to give a thought as to whether your app is going to run on both the systems (that is why java was made in the first place, isn’t it?). I’ve always had the latest version of the sdk, yet I would try and target compiling in a lower possible version, so that even those people would be able to use the apps, who were, well, frozen in time and didn’t go up the “version ladder”. For e.g., ordinary applets, by me and my company, in most of the cases would be compiled in java 1.1, so that no user ends up waiting for an hour before the plugin for the latest version is downloaded and installed (get yourself a coffee if your yawning). For e.g., once on a tour, I happened to visit some site in a cyber café, which said that I needed to install java plugin 1.4 to view the page correctly (apparently, cyber cafes don’t bother much about upgrading java), and when I did, it turned out to be a stupid advertisement (Ahhh! What agony!). Of course, over a period of time, you expect the users to have gone to a level of higher java plugin courtesy other company’s applets, but just to be sure…
Well, so this “dilemma” is real and has to be looked after (you don’t stand a chance if you don’t). Many a times in java forums, you’ll find beginners with the problem of “applet not initializing” and when the compiling is targeted for 1.1, it runs. Preferably, developers should have the latest version (despite the huge bandwidth it’s going to cost you to download it) and they should try and keep their apps designed, if possible, for lower versions for a universal application. Although, this might not necessarily be imposed for a long time, but certainly try and keep your apps designed by the java 1.4 specifications for a few weeks, till most of the users catch on with the tiger. This should also give you sufficient time to upgrade your programming ability version also. A recent survey about java’s versions had about 260 respondents out of which about 15% didn’t know that java had versions, 8% preferred java as the good old java (can’t believe it, me neither), 29% were happy, 32% wanted newer versions but wanted the syntax of older versions to remain and only the bugs being killed and the rest were too confused to have an opinion.
On this note, its now entirely up to you to decide which is your cup of java. I’ve just got a book to learn to tame the tiger and I’ll be using java 1.4 till I tame 1.5 good. So, I think it’ll be around October, when I start using 1.5 hoping (with crossed fingers) that most of the users by then would be roaring with it.
I hope that this small article would help you make a decision about which version of java to use.

Great Plains DOS Support – Notes for Consultant
by admin on March 15th, 2009
Great Plains Accounting, accounting package for mid-size and small companies was in its peak of popularity back in earlier 1990th. It first had DOS interface, later on migrated to classic Windows version (remember earlier event driven Windows and its strange and at the same time revolutionary programming model – guys who remember Borland C++ and Microsoft C++). As each product has its life time – it is almost over for Great Plains Accounting – Great Plains Software was purchased by Microsoft and incorporated into its business systems subdivision: Microsoft Business Solutions.
Support for Great Plains Accounting was discontinued several years ago. Great Plains Accounting is btrieve based application and typical installation has GPDATA (with all the database files in) and GPCODE (with executable code – this code is copied over the network and is executed on each workstation). Typical problems we see with GPA:
1. No Techknowledge database for customers. In the case of Great Plains or Great Plains Dynamics/eEnterprise – customer can do self-support. You need to login to Customer Source and open techknowledge database and try to get your problem found there with the solution. Great Plains Accounting techknowledge database is not available for former GPA customer – you should call to your Microsoft Business Solutions Partner to have them access to proprietary information.
2. Old Hardware. Great Plains Accounting typical system sits on Windows NT 4.0 (sometimes on Windows NT 3.5 or Novell). It was probably installed 5 or more years ago and sits in the very old computer hardware. You may expect (and we see it with our old-timers GPA customers) hard disk failures and RAM failures. We have to do regular fixes – simply reinstalling either code base or database portions or both.
3. Workstation Locks and crashes – btrieve origin of the system architecture uses brtieve files to store current processes status (batch posting, for example) in the file, controlled by posting workstation. In the case of the crash you often see the error message, like: “Unable to access btrieve file for transaction recovery. Must run Btrieve first.” Multiple scenarios might be applied for recovery. In this exact case you have to delete of rename BTR.TRN file to BTR.OLD – this file controls posting process and will be recreated next time you post
We (and Microsoft Business Solutions itself) strongly recommend you to migrate from Great Plains Accounting to Microsoft Great Plains standard 8.0 (budget version) or Microsoft Great Plains 8.0
Happy supporting! if you want us to do the job – give us a call 1-630-961-5918 or 1-866-528-0577! help@albaspectrum.com

Let Your Voice Do The Typing
by admin on February 23rd, 2009
Do your hands get tired of typing? Did you ever wish there was an easier way to network with your computer (like hocus pocus all the information is suddenly in my computer.) If the answer to this question is yes, read on.
This is actually not as difficult as you may think. With this new world of electronics networking together something might spring out at you to open your eyes to new ideas.
DIGITAL TAPE RECORDER:
The Digital Tape Recorder is now changing technology by leaps and bounds.
Example:
(1) If you are attending a meeting – during the meeting or at the end of the meeting you can dictate into your digital tape recorder.
(2) It completely eliminates writing notes.
(3) Next you can download your digital tape recorder into your computer by a cord. It works the same way as downloading your digital camera pictures into your computer.
(4) Your computer will now type out your transcription just like you were hand typing it. You will not have to sit for hours typing, typing and typing.
(5) You can write a manuscript by this method or any document that needs to be typed.
(6) When you purchase your digital tape recorder there is only one model that works with voice activated software. Make sure you ask the sales person for that model only.
Your Digital Tape Recorder is fast, efficient and easy to use. Try it. You might like it.
MICROPHONE:
Another method for voice activation is by using a good microphone. The microphone is the key to clear sound. You dictate directly into the microphone and the computer types along with your voice. You use the same software as described above.
AUDIO CD:
(1) The next step would be making an audio CD.
(2) This requires the use of audio software.
(3) With this method, you can use the digital tape recorder which is a little more complicated.
(4) The easiest method is a microphone directly attached to your computer.
(5) You will then have to edit the software so that the words flow together.
(6) Make sure the sales people will help you understand how all this electronic equipment works and works together.
(7) You might have to find an electronic person to help you privately set up and train you in your new technology. Believe me it will be well worth it. Education is the key to progress.
Thank you for reading my article. I hope you will read my other numerous articles.

EDI Software
by admin on January 26th, 2009
Electronic data interchange (EDI) is a system that enables business entities to exchange information at low administrative costs. A company wishing to install an EDI system has to procure the required software and hardware. EDI software is available for all types of computers ranging from the single PC to mainframes. EDI software basically translates business documents into a digital format complying with the ANSI X12 or EDIFACT standard. The exchange of these digital documents is then handled by the communication software.
The hardware necessary for supporting EDI software depends on requirements such as speed and the extent that the EDI system has to be integrated into other systems of the company. EDI software that facilitates proper interface with the internal systems is preferred over software where data has to be retyped in the standard format. In an ideal EDI system, business documents are automatically converted into a standard digital form and exchanged between the partner companies. This automation eliminates the need of an operator to retype the data, which saves the company considerable expenses in the long run. Quality EDI software is designed to run 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and 365 days a year without being manually handled.
EDI systems that were traditionally operated on private networks, are now increasingly utilizing the power of the Internet. EDI software employs open standards such as Web Forms, XML and Internet EDI (AS2). Good EDI software features self-monitoring tools, automatic notifications and emergency alerts. Additionally, this software handles the translation of EDI documents into various file formats used over the Internet. The communication component of the EDI software should efficiently handle the different types of protocols that are employed.
EDI provides detailed information on EDI, EDI Outsourcing, EDI Software, EDI Services and more. EDI is affiliated with Contact Management Systems.
Microsoft Dynamics GP: Great Plains Recycling Business Automation
by admin on January 23rd, 2009
Microsoft Business Solutions Great Plains could be considered as generic ERP platform to be tailored to fit specific industry and market niche. Being mature MRP system and so having a lot of third party modules, Great Plains could fit the unique industry requirements combining these third parties and custom coding. New version: Microsoft Dynamics Great Plains 9.0 will have more options for C#/VB.Net developer, including more exposure to .Net XML web services and Visual Studio. However the GP workstation client code is Microsoft Dexterity written application and we will be focusing on Great Plains Dexterity customization.
• Industry Specifics. Recycling containers are rented to customers and based on the balance customers might become vendors – we send customer or vendor invoice and receive or send payments. Clients typically pay for container rent and at the same time – we pay to the client for the recycled materials collected
• Service Module. We can use GP Service Advantage Suite or WennSoft Service module to account sending service crews onsite.
• Fixed Assets. We also could deploy Great Plains Fixed Assets module to account and depreciate leased and insured equipment. Fixed Assets serves as assets depreciation tool, so it might not be enough to track assets by projects
• Invoice/Credit Memo. Based on the net results for the month – we should issue invoice or credit memo to the customer and the challenge is – it should be all originated in one screen to automate the user interface. The best way is – Dexterity screen where you get Service Invoice/Order from WennSoft or Service Advantage Suite (in some cases you should send it first to Great plains SOP). In this screen you should be able to enter positive and negative quantities and net it to either invoice or credit memo.
• Customer/Vendor Consolidation. In Great Plains in order to return money to the client you should use customer/vendor consolidation and transfer credit memos to vendor invoices. Please note that Customer/Vendor consolidation module is available for Great Plains Professional (it is not available for Great Plains Standard)
• Payroll and Contractor Expenses. Great Plains Business Portal has employee self service and you can have your contractors and employees to enter their expenses, such as driver tolls and mileage. Another way is to use Great Plains Integration Manager to feed expenses into Payroll or Accounts Payables module

Firefox and World Domination!
by admin on January 16th, 2009
Mozilla Firefox is a free, graphical web browser developed by the Mozilla Corporation and hundreds of volunteers. It is free in every sense and is Microsoft’s enemy #1. So in a world ruled by the laws of money – can a free program really pierce the realms of Government and Business?
The truth is, rich corporations, people and countries and rich because they don’t like spending money – if they can be pitched the idea of implementing Open Source that gives them the features of paid programs with the same “ease-of-use” then we may soon see western nations seeing Open-Source as de-facto.
Schools are already seeing open-source software as a viable solution to the problem of the usual high licensing fee’s of paid software, and, this is where the change will happen – if we can educate our children about the world of open-source then we can rid the world of over-priced software in simply 1 generation.
Recently many 3rd world countries have taken up open-source in Government which caused the panic bells ringing in Mr Gates head. Rumors of Microsoft bribing have been rife and mysteriously many local councils dropped the idea of open source.
But, so far, the open-source Firefox has had over 100 MILLION downloads without any mainstream paid for advertising, which shows word of mouth is both powerfull and happening.

SAP Business One – Local ERP for Multinational Corporation – Brazil
by admin on January 7th, 2009
Multinational Corporation usually has to consider two major criteria in overseas subsidiary MRP system selection. First is its integration with Corporate ERP, deployed in the Headquarters and second – localization status of the proposed ERP, where localization usually assumes two aspects – compliance to tax legislation and local language support. Then international environment may be very diversified, however you will recognize the pattern – when you have manufacturing facility in the small or mid-size country – then tax legislation is usually more “standard”, than if you have production plant in the large country. Consider Brazil, for example – it has unique tax requirements and localization from the tax compliance stand point is usually complicated – you should do your homework in the selection. And, in the case of corporate business, the ERP selection policy usually requires international ERP brand, such as SAP, Oracle or Microsoft Business Solutions. Let’s come to SAP Business One details and options.
• Multilanguage in one company. This feature allows your controller from the headquarter “surf” your overseas ERP through remote connection by simply switching Brazilian Portuguese to US or British English. Whatever happens with your ERP support partner in Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro or any unexpected accounting personnel turnover – you will be in control, because you will know how to use your English screens
• Tax compliance. SAP Business One is localized for Brazilian tax code and the tax engine as SAP believes will also be adopted for another large country, such as India with the same technology approach and programming schema. In our opinion SAP used abstract approach, when it designed the solution, which is flexible and adaptable with multiple tax-challenging markets criteria in the design.
• Integration. Virtually from any report screen you can export your transactions in scope and it could be done in Excel, tab delimited text, etc. Then SAP Business One has integration tool to mySAP/R/3 – in case if your company uses SAP in the Headquarters.
• Licensing. SAP Business One uses All-in-one license type, when you pay fixed price per named user (you can get CRM module only users at half of the regular all-in-one license prices)
• Database Platform. Microsoft SQL Server is reasonably priced plus if you have open license with Microsoft for your company – you may use this advantage.
• Microsoft Office. SAP Business One is tightly integrated with MS Office – it emails through MS Outlook client of local workstation, exports data to Excel, etc. Currently SAP has joint project with Microsoft – Mendocino – to integrate SAP R/3 with Microsoft Office platform. SAP Business One is probably ahead in its original integration technology.
• Brazilian version availability. It is available since February 2006.
• SAP Business One SDK. If you need custom tuning & programming, coming beyond the scope of user-friendly interface modification & customization – you should look for SAP Business One SDK customization partner, who is licensed to program SAP Business One SDK
• Competition. Localized: Portuguese translated and tax tune ERP versions have also Microsoft: Microsoft Navision/Dynamics NAV, Microsoft Axapta/Dynamics AX (since April 2006) (please be sure that Microsoft Solomon/Dynamics SL and Microsoft Great Plains/Dynamics GP are not supported by Microsoft Business Solutions in Brazil), Oracle Financials/Applications/E-Business Suite, SAP mySAP and SAP all-in-one. Plus you may need to check with regional ERP vendors, such as Microsiga
• ERP Implementation Partner selection. This is the question of how comfortable you feel yourself on the local or regional IT consulting market. Typical is the case when ERP implementation company from the Headquarters side subcontracts local ERP implementer in Brazil – or you can do the same – simply by selecting mid-size or small international ERP consulting firm, specializing in international business and present in USA/Europe and Brazil at the same time.

Digital Video Movie Making Freedom is Here
by admin on January 4th, 2009
I wanted to learn how to edit and do more than just join together short digital movie clips. I had found an mpeg joiner program on the internet, but that really wasn’t enough to get the job done. Many digital movie clips were not in mpeg format so that program didn’t work on them. Also mpeg joiner did not allow any alterations to sound quality, lighting or the color of the digital video. Something much better was needed.
One day I ran across the Virtual Dub program. It allows you to modify mpeg, avi, and divx digital video formats. That seemed like it might be what I was looking for. The thing is, to use Virtual Dub, it’s like learning a whole new program but once you learn the basics of working with video, it is really quite easy to use. Virtual Dub has one big limitation. It does not work on Windows media video files. For legal reasons access to those files has been blocked.
Usually the best thing to start with, is to find out the information about the digital video file. Sometimes this can be done by highlighting the file on your computer screen, right clicking the mouse and selecting properties. This works on Windows 98, but not so well on Windows XP which just indicates a video file. If Virtual Dub cannot load the video, it will indicate the reason why it can’t.
If Virtual Dub will load the file, selecting the file menu, and then file information, will tell you all about the digital video file. The information provided is the frame size of the video, the number of frames in the video, how many frames per second are shown, how much time the video takes to run, and the decompressor used to make the video.
Say you want to load an mpeg digital video file, edit out some scenes, enlarge the frame size, lighten up the picture a little, and increase the volume level so it plays louder. This is how it is done, and demonstrates how to use Virtual Dub. To load the file go to the main Virtual Dub menu and select file, then open video file. Select the folder your movie is located in and select the movie. Then click the open box. The movie will load and the first frame will show on your screen.
To edit out a scene you can either play the movie to the point you want to start the cut out area, or left click your cursor arrow on the track marker and drag it along running the movie quickly to the point where you want to start the cut out area. At that point click the button with the little hook pointing to the left, to mark the starting point of your cut area. Play the movie again to the end of the area you wish to cut out. Click the little box stop button. At that point click the button with the little hook pointing to right, to mark the end of the cut out area. Then push your delete key on your key board. That’s it that part of the movie will be deleted in the copy you make.
To enlarge the frame size to make the video picture larger, on the main menu, click video, then filters. In the filters menu click add, then scroll down and select resize, and click, ok. We are going to increase the size to 384 pixels by 288 pixels. So type in 384 in the top box and 288 in the box below it. In the filter mode box select precise bicubic (a=0.60) and click, ok. While still in the filters menu click add, select levels, then click, ok.
Click the show preview button so you can see the changes to the brightness you are going to make to the video. Play with the two top sliding arrows on the right hand side of the screen. They will lighten or darken the picture depending on the direction you move them. When you like the brightness of the picture you have selected click the ok button. You are again on the main filters menu, so click ok again.
To increase the volume of the movie, on the main Virtual Dub menu, click audio, click full processing mode, and click volume. A box will open. Click the little box beside adjust volume of audio channels. Now you can move the track pointer to the right to increase the volume a bit. Click ok. Then play the movie to test the volume level. To adjust the movie sound again go back to the volume area again.
To save the movie the video must be compressed to save disk space. On the main Virtual Dub menu click video, then compression. Select Microsoft mpeg-4 VKI codec V2. Click the configure box, type in 5 for seconds, move the compression control to 75, toward the crispness end of the scale. Move the data rate to the middle of the scale to 2960. Then press the ok button. Press the ok button again.
The audio of the video also must be compressed to save disk space. On the main Virtual Dub menu select audio, then conversion. We are going to change the audio frequency and make it stereo. Select custom and type in 24000. Select stereo and click the ok box. Go back to the main Virtual Dub menu click audio and compression. Select mpeg layer-3. Select the top category 56 kbits/s 24000 hz stereo. Click the ok button.
That’s it. Now you’re ready to save your edited video clip. On the main Virtual Dub menu select file, then save as avi. A box will open. Select the folder to save the video in. Type in a name for the video. Click the save box. Your edited digital movie is now being saved.
You have just learned how to edit digital video files using Virtual Dub.
